Vladimir Tretchikoff

Rosenstiel’s is sorry to announce the death of possibly the world’s most successful commercial artist of the 20th century.  Vladimir Tretchikoff died on 26 August 2006.

Vladimir Tretchikoff was given a full-page obituary in London’s Times newspaper, which opened:  “Vladimir Tretchikoff’s worldwide popularity made him a millionaire several times over, entirely on the strength of his work.”

The Times commented that “Tretchikoff’s best known image must surely be his Chinese Girl, with bluish face and bright red lips, which was adapted from studies of the daughter of a San Francisco merchant”.  Other famous paintings included studies of the dancer Alicia Markova and subjects including “Miss Wong” and “Balinese Girl”.  “The Chinese Girl” is said to have been more widely reproduced than the Mona Lisa.

Vladimir Tretchikoff was 92 when he died and is survived by both his wife and daughter.
