We’ve been watching the usage figures over the last two years and it’s very clear that our www.felixr.com website is being used by more and more people. The number of you accessing the site goes up literally week by week. Technology moves on too, and so does what you can do with it, which is why we have decided now to rebuild the Rosenstiel’s site from scratch to make it faster, and bigger and easier to use. Here is the result. We hope you like it.
The new site includes lots of new functions and facilities and we wanted to point some of these out, and explain them to you.
Brand New Advanced Search Page Refine your search of our 4500 prints on this important new page, which you can reach by clicking the link under the search box on the navigation bar. We’ve added so many new search options here that we need to list and explain some of them separately. You can use any combination of all these new ways of searching but please note that you will need to reset your old search by hitting the ‘Reset’ button before starting a new one.
Search by Colour Use the brand new colour palette on the advanced search page to search for images by colour. Every relevant subject in print has now been described according to its colour values. We’ve had a lot of fun playing with this one…
Search by Standard Size Use the dropdown boxes on the advanced search page to search for images by standard paper size. As you know, we show our sizes in both centimetres and inches and please note that the new site underlines whichever of the two is accurate. For example, a print may have a paper size of exactly 20 x 16 inches, which we would show here also as 50 x 40 centimetres. However, for your convenience, we will underline the inches measurement (thus 20 x 16 ins) to show that the print is sized precisely in inches, not centimetres.
Keyword Hints We’ve re-keyworded every image in print to standardise the words used and to introduce new keyword terms which may not have existed when keywords were first allocated to these subjects, some over 30 years ago. Examples might be words like ‘coastal’ or ‘tropical’. As part of this process, we’ve included a list of the top 100 keyword terms used in the past, which we hope might be helpful to you when you’re thinking how best to search the site.
More Images Per Page We have so many images on this site that we wanted to make it quicker to go through searches which generated a lot of results – ‘photography’ would be a good example. So we show 12 images per page now, rather than 8, and on many monitors it should be possible see all 12 without having to use the scroll bar. We picked 12 images per page, rather than more, so that each page loaded as quickly as possible. We’ve also added though a facility for you to ‘Go To’ a later page in each search result without having to scroll through all the pages in between. Very handy if you know what you’re looking for…
Bigger Thumbnail Images We’ve increased the size of our smallest images by 20% to make it easier to assess these on the screen (and easier on your eyes too…).
New Images We publish so many new images each year (around 800 in 2005) that we’ve added a new page (called, with great imagination, ‘New’) so that you see all the new material we’ve introduced this month, and last month, and the month before that.
Stop Press Everyone wants to know ‘What’s Hot’, which is why we’ve introduced a new set of links straight from the home page to details of the new launches and collections we’re most excited about. These ‘stop press’ pages will be updated weekly.
Artist Biographies We’ve made these easier to find (look under ‘Artists’), and easier to scroll through. We’ve also made them easier to print. Many biographies now include artist photographs too and we’ll be adding more and more photos over the next few months. Obviously we’ll find this difficult though for painters like Michelangelo, who died in 1564… There’s also a new link from each artist’s page directly to all the prints by that artist we have in stock.
Lightboxes The website now includes a Lightbox, so that you can save images you like when you’re browsing the site and come back to look at your entire selection at the end. You can then delete any images you don’t want and either print the page for future reference or order the prints you’ve saved. To order, if you have an account, all you need to do is tell us the quantities required and complete the short order form details, which are requested when you reach the checkout at the end. Please note though that images in your Lightbox will not be saved from session to session. To make this kind of facility work, we would need to keep a great database of information about you here on our webserver, and we do not wish to do this.
Rapid Order If you know exactly what you want, try using our re-designed and quicker-to-use Rapid Order form. The advantage to you is that our system will automatically check your order so that any prints you request with an incorrect code or which are discontinued are flagged up. The order then comes straight to our Customer Support team, so it does not have to be retyped and there is an even lower possibility of error. We will then confirm safe receipt of your order placed in this way, together with details of any appropriate tracking numbers etc. You can print a copy of your order too. We hope that this will be an easier way for you – and for us – to place your orders.
Licensing We now have online over 15000 of the images from the archive of decorative art which we’ve assembled since our foundation in 1880. Only around a third of these are available as print items from stock but users looking for images to license, or for unique prints, can view them all on our redesigned Licensing page.
Information We’ve created a specific information section, and redesigned and re-written its contents. We hope it contains all the background you’ll need.
This site has hundreds of pages, more than 45,000 images, dozens of graphics, millions of words of text, an unbelievably complicated search code and a huge number of different links doing different things in different ways. You have no idea how complicated it has been putting this website together (well, you will do if you’ve ever built a website yourself). So, there are bound to be a few flaws and glitches here and there and we apologise in advance for any of these you might find. Please let us know though when you do find something not quite right, and we’ll change it as soon as possible.
